REPENT :
This word is another word often used in the Kingdom way out of context. We often hear that we should repent and usually we see this picture of someone on his knees saying “I am sorry’. We are advised to repent by Jesus mainly because as he put it “the Kingdom is at hand”. Mat 3:2, Mar 1 :15 In Luke 16:30 Jesus states that even if someone would to come back from the dead it would not be enough to get some to repent.
So Peter and his friends are accused of having had too much wine. He then started to tell them that it’s not wine but an overflow of the Holy Spirit in their life that produced this miracle of languages. He slowly started from the beginning, telling them how Jesus was with them and how they missed him. How they even succeeded in killing him. So in response to this sermon the bystanders were deeply touched and asked Him the following question:
Acts 2:37-39
Now when they heard this they were stung (cut) to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles (special messengers), Brethren, what shall we do? And Peter answered them, REPENT (change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it) and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.
I purposely quoted from the Amplified as it’s the only Bible that expounds on this word REPENT.
Let’s look at the Greek Dictionary
REPENT G3340 Metanoeo
To exercise the mind, to reason, understand
To change one’s mind - your method of thinking & what you think about
To change one’s mind for better, heartily to amend
Reason this anew for yourself
That is what Peter is telling them. “You okes killed your only hope. You did not understand the scriptures. You could have walked with Him, instead you asked for Him to be killed. The Messiah is not to come, He came and you missed Him. So now please, RE-THINK this whole affair and come to the truth so you can also have this joy that we have”
Times of refreshing is not that far away
So repent (change your mind and purpose); turn around and return [to God], [that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean)], that times of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord;
(Act 3:19)
I can hear Peter say; “Do it so times of refreshing can be yours as well as it is ours” This happens to be Paul’s plea in Romans 12; “Be renewed in your thinking so that you might know what God wants”
Think then act
After thinking new start to act on the things that you understand new in a NEW way.
Acts 26:20 Repent and do things that belongs to the repentance
That’s Gods biggest problem with the Revelation congregations. He continuously asks them to repent (Think about these things anew)
Rev 2:16, 21, 22. Rev 3:3, 19
Thinking clearly and according to scripture one tends to see the picture in a different light. An old song said something like this; Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full into his wonderful face. And the things of this earth will grow strangely dim. In the light of his glory and grace.
Re-think Jesus. Who He is. What He is. What He said. What it means to you.
Stay blessed,
