Healing (and Salvation):
John 3:16
“For God so loved the WORLD (that means all man and what’s in it); that He gave His one and only Son (Jesus), that WHOEVER (again any and all person) believes in Him (Jesus) shall NOT PERISH, but HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.”
In other words God says: If you repent from your old ways and ask me to be your Lord and Saviour, I will Save YOU! So that takes care of our salvation which we will go into more detail with the next teaching.
But what about our HEALING? Isn’t it sadly interesting that so many people are afflicted, bound, sick, stricken with whatever the world throws at us?
When was our healing bought by Jesus?
Well, first you need to understand that Jesus wasn’t WHIPPED according to Hebrew Law, BUT ACCORDING TO ROMAN LAW. What’s the difference? Romans were brutal beyond measure.
KJV uses the Greek word: G5417 – φραγελλόω (pronounced = frag-el-lo'-o)
What does this mean – According to the Strongs Concordance phragelloō means:
From a presumed equivalent of the Latin flagellum; to whip, that is, lash as a public punishment: - also known as scourging. fla•gel•lum (fləˈdʒɛl əm) = means a (Roman) LATIN WHIP. So what did a Latin (Roman) whipping look like?
Let me first explain the actual act of Scourging (Whipping):
Flogging was a legal preliminary to every Roman execution, and only women and Roman senators or soldiers (except in cases of desertion) were exempt.
The usual instrument was a short whip (flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls and/or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals (See picture). Occasionally, staves also were used.
For scourging, the man was stripped of his clothing, and his hands were tied to an upright post (See picture). The back, buttocks, and legs were flogged either by two soldiers (Lictors – see explanation below) or by one soldier who alternated positions.
The severity of the scourging depended on the disposition of the Lictors and was intended to weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or death. After the scourging, the soldiers often taunted their victim.
The Roman soldiers, amused that this weakened man (Jesus) had claimed to be a King, began to mock Him by placing a robe on His shoulders, a crown of thorns on His head, and a wooden staff as a scepter in His right hand.
Next, they spat on Jesus and struck Him on the head with the wooden staff.
Then, when the soldiers tore the robe from Jesus' back, they most assuredly reopened the scourging wounds.
The severe scourging, with its intense pain and appreciable blood loss, most probably left Jesus in a pre-shock state. In addition, hematidrosis (see explanation below) had rendered Jesus’ skin particularly tender.
The physical and mental abuse meted out (give a punishment to someone) by the Jews and the Romans, as well as the lack of food, water, and sleep, also contributed to his generally weakened state.
Therefore, even before the actual crucifixion, Jesus' physical condition was at least serious and possibly critical.
This is how Jesus was whipped for our healing!
Medical Aspects of Scourging:
As the Roman soldiers repeatedly struck the victim's back with full force, the iron balls would cause deep contusions, and the leather thongs and sheep bones would cut into the skin and Subcutaneous (underlying) tissues. Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations (deep cuts) would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles (deep muscle tissue) and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock. The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim would survive on the cross.
Hematidrosis [means: Hematidrosis (also called hematohidrosis) is a very rare condition in which a human sweats blood. It may occur when a person is suffering extreme levels of stress, for example, facing his or her own death. Several historical references have been described; notably by Leonardo da Vinci: describing a soldier who sweated blood before battle, men unexpectedly given a death sentence, as well as descriptions in the Bible, that Jesus experienced hematidrosis when he was praying in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:43-44).]
Lictors are people appointed who act as specialist scouts and vanguards, to seek out and locate the person to be punished.
Isaiah prophesied what would happen to Jesus and what each suffering was for:
Isa 53:5 (KJV)
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
Mat 8:17 (AMP)
" And thus He fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, He Himself took [in order to carry away] our weaknesses and infirmities and bore away our diseases." [Isa. 53:4.]
So let me explain about HEALING. Do you see that HEALING is NOT a “then” thing that only happened in Bible times? It’s a NOW thing, and something which mature Christians all over the world is supposed to practice – FAITH IN ACTION. Our HEALING, just as our SALVATION was bought with the precious blood of Jesus even before the crucifixion.
WHY was HEALING before the CRUCIFIXION?
Jesus healed even those who did NOT believe in Him. You have got to get your head around this. It’s about standing on the Word of God and that SETTLES it in YOUR MIND! It’s not about “sin” in the life of the person you pray for; nor is it about “sin” in the person who is doing the praying. Yes, we are all under construction and for that God gave us GRACE, and He is working with each of His people at His pace. HOWEVER, health is something He wants for every single person in this world, regardless of faith, religion or creed (For God so loved the WORLD…). God is so NOT happy about any one person dying in any way, shape or form. You are His Body on the earth – START MOVING!
Salvation is a choice – once you give yourself to God, and believe Him to be YOUR Lord (to stand under HIS WILL) and Saviour; you need to hear the Word of God. By hearing comes FAITH. Obedience is a large part of this – GO DO. Don’t worry about what people think when you stop and pray for someone. It’s not a spectacle, and it doesn’t have to be a long prayer either. Many times Jesus just had so much compassion in Him that when he SPOKE the word or touched the afflicted person’s hand/body, they were healed and set free.
Instead, consider what GOD thinks of YOU. And He just simply adores you. He loves YOU! You’re the apple of His eye. He wants to be your All-in-All.
Get the milk and move on to the MEAT which is FAITH IN ACTION:
Lay hands and heal the sick - even the so called TERMINAL/FATAL ILLNESSES & DISEASES, go set the oppressed free, drive out demons, raise the dead. Even if you have to pray x10 times but stand FIRM in the Word of God. The enemy is COUNTING on YOU GIVING UP…making you think or say THIS ISN’T WORKING!!! Remember: GOD = GOOD, DEVIL (whatever you want to call the father of LIES!) = BAD! If it’s NOT in The Bible – IT’S NOT OF GOD.
SIGNS, WONDERS & MIRACLES shall follow, says the Bible. Theses signs are for those who aren’t saved yet – for the unbeliever to show them God’s power and might. You don’t need to see it because you KNOW and have a relationship with Christ; but it does strengthen your faith as you go forth.
Mar 16:17 – 18:
17) And these attesting signs (in other words it testifies to God’s power and grace) will accompany those who believe: in My name (in the name of Jesus Christ) they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages;
18) They will pick up serpents; and [even] if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.
Once they have been healed, delivered, raised from the dead or whatever it is you had to do, then you disciple them – Pray with them to get saved, explain what to do next – I will tell you more on this on the next teaching when we talk about Salvation and the Crucifixion.
Listen, to live a GODLY life is NOT hard. Not your will, but His will (that’s only possible by renewing your thinking according to the Word of God!). The Bible says we are a PECULIAR PEOPLE. Let people think what they want, what have they got to loose except their illness (from flue to cancer and worse i.e. AIDS & HIV) – your faith is enough for them. It’s all about COMPASSION & having FAITH in the FINISHED works Jesus Christ HAS ALREADY DONE.
Next time I will share with you what Jesus went through on the Cross during His actual crucifixion to purchase our salvation.
